They are ugly, annoying, and as noted by copyblogger only marginally effective. I am getting sick of these AVG ads popping up you are losing fans and quick becaus of these annoying AVG ads. I have been a fan of AVG since 2008 this After some time and calculation by one of our team members we discovered I spent more than an hour a days just closing these annoying popups. It was a debate that we had at HubSpot for many weeks before we finally found a comfortable balance.

So I've learned not to judge something based on how I feel about it. A lot of the things you mentioned do really annoy me also (ie: I like using my keyboard for a lot of stuff). In the early days of the internet, they were everywhere, but these days all major browsers block pop-up windows by default. Some people want new pages /elements to snap into view , not appear from the side or expand from a point.
